sql is too small a target

Published by admin on

ok. so while you’re falling over laughing, here’s what i did today.

I decided a couple of days ago to give structured online training another go. I had bought a few courses on udemy.com a few years back, so started there.

I found the old Qlikview bootcamp that i bought, and it had miraculously been updated at the end of 2024, so started in.

need to load up a new database from backup. winning! i have an sql server for that.

except it can’t see local files. =(

google > need to add MSSQLSERVER to local file permission for folders i want it to have read/write access to. =)

need to connect qlikview on local machine to sql server. right right right. need to set up a system data source for that. =|

need an ODBC driver. check. i can download things. =)

need to set up a system dsn (Administrative Tools > ODBC Data Sources (64 Bit)). check. i actually remembered (most of) how to do this from the last time i did it about 8 years ago. =)

feed ODBC driver, username and password to qlikview. winning! connection achieved. =)

so back to the title: sql is too small a target, because while i want to learn more about how to do “stuff” in sql server(s), i also want to be able to do things with the data that i manage.. which is where qlikview, excel, power bi, and possible others like cognos, tableau, yellowfin, crystal etc etc etc come into play.
